Some experts believe that the two are doomed to outright conflict as China, the rising power, challenges the United States, the established global hegemon. Known as the Thucydides Trap, the phenomena is sometimes seen as an unshakeable reality of shifting global power dynamics. But assuming the Thucydides Trap is inevitable for the U.S. and China is itself a trap.
